Your child will have reading homework every night (Monday thru Thursday). He/She should be reading, (or be read to) and discussing texts every night for 20 minutes. Ask your child what he/she has read (or heard, if you are doing some of the reading). If reading fiction, discuss the characters, the settings (times and places), the problems and solutions contained in the story. Discuss how the characters feel, think, act and change throughout the story. If reading non-fiction, discuss what the author is teaching, what the main points are and the details that support the main ideas. Explore the text features, such as maps, photos, captions, time-lines, diagrams, etc. With both fiction and non-fiction, make connections to other texts, or a topic on the news, or a personal experience. Have your child write a one sentence summary, or draw a cartoon strip, or create a hashtag to describe what they are learning from their text.
Spelling Homework is optional if your child does well with the in-class work expected. If your child struggles with the spelling patterns, please review the activities given each week on the unit spelling sheet. Students are expected to record their spelling words in their agendas so they will always have access to them at home.
Unfinished class work will be sent home for completion.
